Reliving our hands-on ecological initiative at La Xopera.
On Tuesday, March 24th, students from IES Bernat Guinovart demonstrated an inspiring commitment to environmental stewardship through a volunteering day along the banks of our local river.
The morning began at La Xopera, where we were honored to be joined by Isidre Pegenaute, an active member of the Xúquer Viu association. Isidre delivered a captivating and insightful talk on the ecological significance of riverside woodlands (bosc de ribera), emphasizing their vital role in preserving biodiversity and providing natural flood protection. The students actively engaged with the session, asking thought-provoking questions and recording an interview as part of the international Erasmus CREATE project.
Following the educational briefing, the students rolled up their sleeves for a practical cleanup effort. Targeting the heavily degraded riverbed and surrounding picnic areas, they put environmental awareness into practice. Thanks to their tireless dedication, the team successfully collected 15 bags (120 liters each), removing a staggering 70 kg of plastic waste and litter from the site.
This initiative underscored a vital truth: young people are fundamental drivers of positive environmental change.
